Van Gogh painted this piece in December of 1888 as the second part in a two-chair series, complimenting his work Gaugin’s Chair. Van Gogh and famous painter Henri-Paul Gaugin were at one point friends and companions, although their friendship eventually became strained and turned sour as did their plans of sharing a studio. Aware of the fact that this dream would no longer become a reality, Vincent painted this pair as stand-alone chairs in order to represent the sadness and isolation he felt. He included his pipe, tobacco, and signature in the background as personal representation in the piece- personalizing the object and making it representational of himself.
