From the minute Van Gogh arrived in Arles, France, he became obsessed with representing what he called “night effects” as seen in his most famous Starry Night and this piece Starry Night Over the Rhône. This work of art was one of three painted in September of 1888 which used the stars as abstracted symbolic elements- another piece being the well-known Cafe Terrace at Night. Constructed on the banks of the river just a minute or two away from his widely known Yellow House, the colors and strokes were a precursor to his most famous Starry Night. He enjoyed the challenge of painting at night and enjoyed the task of painting not only the sky but the shining reflection of gas lamps dancing on the water.
