While living in Arles, France, Van Gogh painted a series of the Roulin family from 1888 to 1889, including one of his most iconic pieces The Postman. Van Gogh loved to paint portraits but found it extremely difficult to find models due to both his financial and mental state- it was a rarity that he was able to get one model, let alone a whole family. Joseph Roulin, in particular, became a friend and supporter of Van Gogh and pushed him to create regardless of popular opinion. The entire family was painted more than once during the winter of 1888, but the postman himself was painted a total of four times. The family unit consisted of Joseph, his wife Augustine, his sons Armand and Camille, and daughter Marcelle.
