Widely known for his unique artistic style, Warhol established a print-publishing business through which he issued a handful of screen printed portfolios on his favorite subjects. He called this business Factory Editions, and Marilyn Monroe was the first of these pieces he created. Warhol worked with a total of five screens per image in order to generate the distinct colorful multi-dimensional graphic effect. One screen held the photographic image while the other four were reserved for four different colors; this is how he achieved the misregistration or imperfect look. The more he replicated the figure, the more variety he achieved- repetition was crucial to Warhol’s process. Warhol notes, “The more you look at the same thing, the more the meaning goes away, and the better and emptier you feel”.
